Isla Saona is one of the Dominican Republic’s top excursion destinations. The 110 square kilometres large island is part of the nature reserve Parque Nacional del Este and is known as home of numerous, among them also rare bird species.

How to get to Saona Island ?

Day trips to the paradisiacal island in the Caribbean Sea are offered by various providers and organizers. Here the holidaymaker can usually decide for himself whether the journey should be rather comfortable and with several intermediate stops or on the fastest way.

Saona can be reached with speedboats within a short time. Another way to get there is by catamaran.

Starting point of the day trips is usually the region around Punta Cana, but also from the north coast of the Dominican Republic trips to Isla Saona can be booked. Here you first travel by coach and afterwards by sea travel.

Saona Island Sights – What is there to see?

Saona scores as a designated nature reserve with pristine white sandy beaches and crystal clear water. Some beaches on the island are available for exuberant bathing pleasure and relaxing hours under the sun. This includes Catuano Beach. There is also an infrastructure, sanitary facilities, beach chairs as well as bistros and bars. The waters of the coastal region are also ideal for snorkelling.

Particularly colourful coral reefs, which provide a habitat for the species-rich fauna of the island’s underwater world, can be found on Canto del Playa. The beach is less touristically developed, but equipped with impressive palm trees and thus offers the unique Caribbean flair.

Another attraction is the only settlement in the otherwise protected area, Mano Juan. The number of locals is approximately 300.

The fishing village offers visitors an insight into the way of life of the islanders, who make a living here without vehicles and western luxury from fishing and the sale of souvenirs.

Weather – When is the best time to travel?

In general it can be said that a trip to Paradise Island in the Caribbean is possible all year round.
Nevertheless, the fewest rainy days are recorded for the months January to April.
The highest average temperatures are from April to November.
May, June, July and August are considered the months with the highest precipitation.
Due to the amount of precipitation and the climatic conditions, excursions to Saona Island are less recommended in May and November than during the rest of the year.

A real highlight on day trips to Saona is the Piscina Natural, which means “the largest bathtub in the world”. This is an impressive sand plateau in the middle of the Caribbean Sea near the island. Here, a wide variety of fish species can be observed at close range in hip-deep water. There are also numerous starfish around the plateau.

Sea turtle conservation project

For animal lovers, the sea turtle conservation project on the southern side of the island in Mano Juan is worthwhile. Here visitors learn interesting facts about the four species and with a little luck even hatching baby turtles can be observed.
