8 days Diving in Puerto Plata

The Dominican Republic with the Atlantic Ocean in the north and the Caribbean Sea in the south offers dive sites for every level of diver. As the island is surrounded by reef belts, there is a varied underwater landscape with shallow reef landscapes and coral gardens, plateaus and slopes up to steep walls.

Fantastic underwater world of Puerto Plata Region

The cliffs at depths from 5 to 40 metres are often crossed by caves of different sizes and depths and there are tunnels and underwater caves that can be dived. Shipwrecks can be found in the north, in Samaná and off the south coast. Coral fish and various reef inhabitants up to large fish like barracudas, eagle rays, manta rays or reef sharks can be found in the waters of the Dominican Republic.

The best time to visit the region around Sosua is from June to September. The water temperatures are about 29 degrees, visibility can be up to 40 meters.

Day 3 – Dives to the ‘Deep Wall’ and to the ‘Coral Garden Wall’

After breakfast, transfer to the Playa Sosua. After putting on the equipment we go by boat to the deep wall. It begins at a depth of 15 m and is crossed by several canyons. One of them extends at a depth of 23 to 32 m. In 28 m there is a grotto, in which often angelfish and king crabs are sighted. In the afternoon we will go to a very beautiful wall covered with corals, which starts at a depth of 20 m and drops down to approx. 35 m. In 28 m and 32 m there are different caves in which you often find turtles and lobsters. From the wall, the dive ends in a nearby coral garden, where the dive comes to an beautiful end. Return to the hotel.

Day 4 – Dives to the ‘Ray Point’ and to the ‘Puntilla Deep’

After breakfast, transfer to the Playa Sosua. In the morning, dive to ‘Ray Point’, a wall that begins at a depth of 23m and drops down to 40m. Different kinds of stingrays can be found here and with a lot of luck even an eagle ray or a manta ray might glide past. Sargassum triggerfish can also be seen. In the afternoon, dive to the ‘Puntilla Deep’. This wall starts at 5m depth, drops down to about 20m and runs almost parallel to the bay of Sosua. At a short distance from the wall is a large rock covered with beautiful corals. It starts at 20m depth and drops down to 40m. Large sponges and fan corals cover the rocks. Various moray eels, crabs and lobsters are often seen in the crevices. It is possible to either to dive along the wall or to make a multilevel dive. Return to the hotel.

Day 5 – Riding excursion ‘Mountain and River’

After breakfast, departure from the hotel at 08:40 am and transfer to the Rancho el Contento horse ranch. The riding tour starts around 09:00 am. The riding excursion with an English speaking riding instructor leads to the mountains, where a stopover at a mountain village school is made. Return ride along the beautiful and crystal clear river Rio Veragua. Opportunity to swim in the river. Soft drinks included. The total duration of the tour is approx. 3 hours. Return to the hotel.

Day 6 – Dives to the ‘Airport Wall’ and to the ‘Zingara’ wreck

After breakfast, transfer to the Playa Sosua. In the morning, dive to the ‘Airport Wall’, a long reef with an approximate length of 1.5km, which runs along the coastal section of the airport Puerto Plata. In some places the reef roof starts at a depth of only 5 m and then drops a bit further down to a depth of 24 m as a drop-off. The wall is crossed in some places by tunnels through which one can dive. There are also small caves and grottos to look into. Due to the proximity to the open sea, one can definitely encounter barracudas, eagle rays, manta rays or a reef shark on the Airport Wall. In the afternoon, dive to the 45 m long  ‘Zingara’ wreck. The disused banana steamer has been gutted and cleaned beforehand. By eliminating all sources of danger it has been made especially accessible for divers and in the meantime  sponges and hard corals populate the wreck also. Many species of fish found a home and you often encounter French imperial fish, grunts, snapper shoals, as well as large green moray eels. Barracudas and sharks have also been spotted. Not far from the stern at a depth of approx. 36 m there are often large stingrays lying in the sand. Depending on the conditions and air consumption, you can end the dive at the nearby wall. Certified Nitrox divers can prolong their fun with a Nitrox mixture. Return to the hotel.
